Principal’s Report

Learning Today Leading Tomorrow

 

Dear Parents,

Returning from Long Service Leave

Thank you to everyone for their very warm welcome back from my Long Service Leave. I had a wonderful trip visiting Greece, Italy and France.

           

A very big thankyou to Ms Amy Tinetti for leading the school in my absence and members of the PLC Leadership Team for providing very much appreciated support and assistance to all: Mrs Melinda Oldham, Mr David Jenkins, Mr John Jacobs and Mr Bill Manuel.

Assessment & Reporting

In Week 10 on Wednesday 26 June, families will receive their child’s June Report on detailing their academic progress during Semester 1, including effort and behaviour. Parents will find the report informative and we encourage you to discuss the contents with your child.

The Victorian Curriculum is structured as a single developmental learning continuum and is organised by levels not years of schooling. The curriculum consists of Towards Foundation Levels A to D and Levels Foundation to 10. All curriculum areas have achievement standards, describing what students are able to understand and do.

All students’ progress along the learning continuum at their own rate and from their own starting point. Students are taught at the level that suits their needs, rather than being taught to the year level and age group they are in. Teachers provide structured and explicit learning opportunities to support the learning for all students, including those students with additional learning needs or a disability. Please keep in mind that Assessment for improved student learning and deep understanding requires a range of assessment practices to be used with three overarching purposes:

  • Assessment for learning: occurs when teachers use inferences about student progress to inform their teaching (formative assessment)
  • Assessment as learning: occurs when students reflect on and monitor their progress to inform their future learning goals (formative assessment)
  • Assessment of learning: occurs when teachers use evidence of student learning to make judgements on student achievement against goals and standards (summative assessment).

Schools are required to report against the Victorian Curriculum F-10 achievement standards, which includes towards foundation levels A-D, and the standards outlined in the EAL developmental continuum.

This means:

  • reporting directly against the achievement standards (not the level or band descriptions, or content descriptions).
  • reporting against the achievement standards defined for each learning area and capability taught, consistent with the teaching and learning program(s) schools have designed.

Foundation stage, years prep to 2

Schools report student achievement against the achievement standards in five focus areas: English, mathematics, health and physical education, the arts, and personal and social capability.

These areas all have a standard at foundation and the  focus at the foundation stage (P-2) is on these five curriculum areas.

Schools are required to report against the achievement standard in:

  • English and mathematics twice a year indicating:
    • the level of achievement reached by each student
    • the age-related expected level of achievement for each student.
  • Exceptions are where it has been determined by schools in partnership with parents and carers to be unnecessary for an individual student.
  • English achievement standards are set out in the three modes to be reported on: reading and viewing, writing, and speaking and listening.
  • Mathematics achievement standards are set out in the three strands to be reported on: number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability.
  • Physical education twice a year. This is reported on separately to health education.
  • Health education, the arts, and personal and social capability. These are reported on as they are taught over the two-year band of school in line with each individual school’s learning program(s).

Breadth stage, years 3 to 8

Schools report student achievement against the achievement standards in all learning areas and capabilities with a focus on English, mathematics and science.

Schools are required to report against the achievement standard in:

  • English and mathematics twice a year indicating:
    • the level of achievement reached by each student
    • the age-related expected level of achievement for each student
  • Exceptions are where it has been determined by schools in partnership with parents and carers to be unnecessary for an individual student.
  • English achievement standards are set out in the three modes to be reported on: reading and viewing, writing, and speaking and listening.
  • Mathematics achievement standards are set out in the three strands to be reported on: number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability.
  • Science at least once a year. This commences in year 3, or earlier if this is part of the teaching and learning program, and is required to include:
    • the level of achievement reached by each student
    • age-related expected level of achievement for each student.
  • Physical education twice a year. This is reported on separately to health education.
  • All learning areas and capabilities. These are reported on as they are taught over the two-year band of school in line with each individual school’s learning program(s). These include health education, the arts, the humanities, languages, technologies and the four areas of capabilities (personal and social, ethical, intercultural, and critical and creative thinking).

 

Within the report, there is a page for parents to provide feedback to the school about their child’s progress and the report and I invite you to return this page with any comments to your child’s class teacher. The student reflections also form a very important part of the June Student Report and in this section, the students can write about their any aspects of their learning that may have been particularly valuable, memorable, and effective or for another reason. I am always highly interested in this part of the report as it can give valuable insight into each student’s journey over the first semester. I have been very impressed by the comments across the grades.

If further information is required speak to your child’s class teacher.

The teachers have put a tremendous amount of time into writing each of your child’s comments and assessing each area of the curriculum and I thank them for the hours and hours of work spent doing so. A big thank you to Mr David Jenkins for leading Assessment and Reporting.

Finance & School Council Meeting

The next Finance meeting will be on Monday 17 June at 6.30pm followed by School Council at 7pm.

2020 Prep Enrolments

We would like all families who have pre-schoolers starting school next year to please get their enrolment forms into the office by the end of this term as planning is already well underway for transition and the November dates which are on the school’s website.

   End of Term 2

This is a reminder for parents that school will be finishing on Friday 28 June. The students will be dismissed from the usual East or West Sites at 2.30pm.

Oval Update:

It is great to see that the turf has been laid across the whole oval and we are patiently waiting for our Kanga Cricket pitch to be completed. We are now in the “Maintenance Phase” and this will continue for 3 months while the turf settles in. We are hoping to have the use of our oval back by the middle of Term 3, I will keep you all posted as I receive developments.

Krithik 1A – For doing a wonderful job cutting, colouring and creating his “Adjective flower craft’ this week. Well done!

Coco 3F – For settling in well back at GHPS and working well and applying herself to all learning tasks.

Jessi 3F – For her complete and well written sentences during comprehension tasks.

Siddharth B 3S – For his excellent application to writing creative “Dynamic Dialogue” scenes! Awesome work!

Senuth 3S – For being an excellent student who strives to do his best at all times.

Riley 4J – For your outstanding efforts to complete your writing tasks this week. Keep up the great work!

Alexander 4J – For Excellent teamwork and dedication to your sequencing and illustrating work

Romani – 6J – For creating, showing and sustaining inspirational leadership with your e-smart Captain responsibilities.

Salil 6J – Impressive trend-setting, inspiring and for providing a leading role model example, with the design creation and necessary modifications to the construction of your balsa wood racing car. Impressive also is how you’ve been assisting others with this exciting science project.


Exciting news for the Premiers’ Reading Challenge! 

                           

Glen Huntly Primary School have read a total of 5,354 books and 71 students have completed the challenge so far.

The top 5 readers are Siddharth J in 4J, Siddhant S in 3S, Charitha in 3S, Asher W in 2C, and Anirudh S in 2C.

The Hanmadang Taekwondo competition was held on Sunday 9th June. Ivory, Raffi, Asher and Sampson all competed.

All performed very well, with all receiving medals. Well done.


 

Families holding a valid means-tested concession card or foster parents are eligible to apply for the Education State Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund.

To be eligible for the fund, a parent or legal guardian of a student attending a Victorian Primary School MUST hold a Pension or Concession Card or Centrelink Health Care Card.

This form is available from the office and must be filled out each year.

Dear supporter,

Seeing Eye Dogs mums April, Carmel, Dodi, Dulcie, Flick and Giselle will be expecting their new bundles of puppy joy over the next few months. In August the girl gang will have 40 new puppies looking for their new homes!

What is puppy caring?
You can care for a pup from 8 weeks up to 15 months of age, either full-time or a minimum of 6 months if a shorter time is more suitable for you.

Your role as a puppy carer is to:
• Provide a safe, loving home and to nurture a Seeing Eye Dogs puppy
• Help to socialise the pup in everyday situations
• Teach basic skills such as toilet training, to sit, and to walk nicely on the lead.

The cost of all equipment, food, vet care and training is covered by Seeing Eye Dogs.
